How to add a UPI QR code to your invoice
Your client opens the PDF, scans the code with any UPI app, and the amount is already filled in. No typing your UPI ID wrong, no “send me your number again”.
Why a QR code gets you paid faster
A lot of late payments aren't about money. They're about friction. The client sees the invoice on WhatsApp, means to pay later, and later never comes because they'd have to copy a UPI ID, open GPay, paste it, type the amount and double-check it.
A UPI QR code turns that into one step. They scan it from the PDF on their laptop, or from a printout, and confirm.
What a UPI payment QR actually contains
It's just a upi://pay link drawn as a QR code. The parts that matter:
| Field | What it is | Example |
|---|---|---|
pa | Your UPI ID (payee address) | rahul.design@okaxis |
pn | Your name or business name | Rahul Design Studio |
am | Amount, so the client doesn't type it | 12500.00 |
cu | Currency | INR |
tn | Note, usually the invoice number | INV-0042 |
Putting the invoice number in the note matters more than people think. When five clients pay you the same week, it's how you tell which payment was for which job.
Three ways to do it
1. Paste your shop QR into a Word or Canva invoice
Works, but the QR from your bank app has no amount in it. The client still types the total, and that's where mistakes happen.
2. Generate a QR per invoice on a website
You can build the upi://pay link yourself on a QR generator site. It's fine for one invoice a month. It gets old fast.
3. Let the invoice app draw it for you
This is what we built into Invoe. You save your UPI ID once in your business details. Every invoice PDF then carries a QR with that invoice's total and number already in it.
Invoe — offline invoice maker for Android. Free for 5 invoices a month. No account, no ads.
Get it on Google PlayStep by step in Invoe
- Install Invoe from Google Play. There's no sign-up, it opens straight to your first invoice.
- In your business details, add your UPI ID. You can also add bank details, IBAN and your PAN or tax ID.
- Create the invoice in INR: client, items, due date. (The QR only appears on INR invoices, since UPI is rupees only.)
- Export the PDF. The QR code is on it, with the amount.
- Share it to WhatsApp. The file is named like INV-0042 - Client Name - 16 Oct 2026.pdf, so it doesn't get lost in their chat as “invoice.pdf”.
Everything happens on your phone. Invoe doesn't have a server, so your client list and amounts aren't uploaded anywhere. That also means it works with no signal at all.
Common questions
Does the client need a specific UPI app?
No. Any app that scans UPI QR codes reads it: GPay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM or a bank app.
Is it free?
The free plan gives you 5 invoices a month with PDF export and no watermark. Premium is a one-time $7.99 for unlimited invoices, your logo, quotes and more. It isn't a subscription.
Can I still put my bank account details on the invoice?
Yes. You can show bank details and a UPI QR together, for clients who prefer NEFT or IMPS.
